I have a 2001 f150 4x4 5.4 Liter 72000 miles.
There is a rubbing sound that is only audible when the brakes are applied. And only when applied with light pressure. The noise will contine intermittently until you come to a complete stop. If the brake is applied aggressively there is no sound at all. I am not sure if it is a brake issue or some thing in the front end that is flexing when slowing down.

Anybody got any ideas?

judging from the description, most likely...you have a bad brake rotor, compounded by a sticky brake caliper assembly.
Could be something simple like the caliper pins need the grease/anti-squeal. Mine would make a noise only when brakes were applied. Greased them up and no more noise.
I may try that but the pins & bolts are new and recently greased due to caliper bracket bolt liberating itself a few weeks ago. I replaced them then. I am beginning to think wheel bearing though. I just figured out how to disengage the front drive shaft from the differential. Vacuum leak to the actuator on the disengage side. I thought for a while there may be some noise from that but there is no change.
