I'm doing a low budget resto on my truck. I used Summit epoxy and will use their single stage satin black when the time come. This will be a driver, not a show truck. I'm satisfied with my body work and have sprayed about 4 coats of epoxy. Is it really necessary to now spray it with high build primer, block and finish coat, or can I just spray a couple more coats of epoxy and block that? Summit claims their epoxy sands easily I have to admit it sprayed nice and flat and sanded great. What will the extra step of high build primer really buy me on a driver quality, garage paint job?
If you are happy with the bodywork, just sand the epoxy and paint directly over it. I use epoxy as a sealer (blocked) on any high end paint jobs.
High build primer will fill any minor imperfections and sand scratches and get you that mirror finish IF it is blocked correctly.
AFAIK, the high build primer was developed to allow body shops to spend less time sanding on filler and feather edging, and to get on to the block sanding of primer. Speed is the key in production shops these days.
I highly recommend you get a quart of high build and see for yourself. Hit it with a coat after you block it out. It will fix the minor imperfections the epoxy sealer won't. Fills the sand scratches and small imperfections that you won't see until you paint. If the budget is tight, just hit the areas you suspect aren't quite right and the quart will go a long way. Fill primer is much like a glazing putty. But it goes on much thinner and finds the imperfections for you after you block it out. Not a step I would ever skip. Body prep is too much work to skip an important step and settle for flaws that don't need to be there. I am an amatuer painter, but I have painted 20 or so cars.

1970 Mustang 22 gallon tank from ebay. I needed to trim the lower frame edges about 1/4" and fab up a 1" square tube frame to mount it. There's a how-to post on this site that I used.
