butterfly jams

I have a 1982 F150 with the 300 6. The butterfly in the one barrel carb occasionally jams partially open and wont move. It feels like something is blocking it from moving and I can't see what it is.

if I tap on it for a little bit and keep working at it, it will suddenly move freely and the truck runs fine.

I am suspecting the electric choke, but I thought I would consult the powers of the forum for help on this one.

I resurrected this truck from death and drive it occasionally to work, so its a work in progress....

any help would be appreciated.

Recently, someone else had this problem. He disassembled the choke housing [black plastic and circular]. There is a rod with a piston shape which was rusted. This is oriented vertically. He soaked it with PB Blaster, I believe. It most likely has varnish on it from old gas and fumes.

Does the jamming keep it from idling, but you can still rev the engine, or will it not move at all?

As was said by 1986F150six, check to see if the choke is coming on.

The factory choke is both electric assist and Thermostatic contolled. Does the choke still have an hot air tube hooked up from the choke stove in the exaust manifold? Does the tube have any holes to alow cold air into the choke housing? Is the tube missing etc...

These problems would close the choke and cause the fast idle cam to engage the throttle, keeping the butterfly open at fast idle.

This will not cause the butterfly to jam in both directions though, unless there is a defective part or bent linkage somewhere.

Other possibilties if the butterfly totally jams. Carb nuts tightened too tight causing the throttle body to warp. Worn out throttle body where the throttle shaft goes through the carb. If it's out of round or sloppy it could make the throttle plate jam.

Check the above. If that's all good and the choke is not causing it, does it do it after you have run down a the highway for a little bit? If so, and it seems to have started doing it in the cooler damp weather, it could be carb icing.

It is stuck in position. I was driving down the road last night before it was fully warmed up and it was like the gas just shut off. Then it wouldn't start. After I loosened it up and it moved freely, then it started fine and would run down the road.

I found out what it was .........
the piston piece inside the choke looks like it was broken off from the shaft the butterfly sits on.
This piece must be getting pushed up by the hot air from the manifold and sometimes jamming the rod so the butterfly can't move.

Looks like the only way to fix this "well" is to replace the carb.

If you have a good carb, hold onto to it and cherish and protect it. Go to the junkyard and get another old one and rob the part out of it.

See if any of these people will pull it off and ship it to you.
