V-10 Overheating

My 6.8 V10 runs great on a level roadway. However, when I climb a hil at 65MPH+, the tem gauge begins to climb and nearly goes into the red.

I might add that when I turn on the dash air, it goes into the red.

Ford worked on it a year ago and said it was the thermostat, but I just returned from a 400 mile trip and I can attest that it is not fixed.

Vehicle is a 2000 Dutchstar Motorhome.

I've had some folks tell me it may be due to air in the cooling system but I can't get anyone to tell me how to bleed the air?

Also had some comment about the clutch fan. I don't hear it come on or off.

HELP...

V-10 Overheating

Hello scarpa and welcome to FTE!

I would doubt at this point that air in your cooling system is a factor unless you have drained it and refilled recently or your water pump is going bad and causing cavitation.

Clutch fan? Not a bad place to start. It does sound like the fan is not pulling enough air through your radiator. However, based on your vehicle type, it may not hurt to install a pusher electric fan to the front of your radiator since the motor and tranny are working hard in your application. It would add a safty margin to what you have.

Check your clutch fan first though.

V-10 Overheating

Do you know where the bleed valve is on the V-10?

Last time I went on a long trip was when I last had trouble. That's when they changed out the thermostat and fluid.

Thanks,
Rob

There is no bleed valve. However the shop manual provides the following steps to bleed the system.

" 1. To fill, reverse the draining procedure.
2. Add the proper engine coolant mixture to the degas bottle.
3. Move the temperature blend selector to the full warm position.
4. Run the engine until it reaches operating temperature at 2,000 rpm for 5 minutes.
5. Turn off engine and allow the cooling system to cool.
6. Add the proper engine coolant mixture to the degas bottle until the coolant level is between the "COOLANT FILL LEVEL" marks.

CAUTION: If the air discharge remains cool and the engine coolant temperature gauge does not move, the engine coolant level is low in the system and must be filled. Stop the engine, allow to cool and fill the cooling system as described.

Start the engine and allow to idle until normal operating temperature is reached. Hot air should discharge from the A/C vents. The engine coolant temperature gauge should maintain a stablized reading in the middle of NORMAL range and the upper radiator hose should feel hot to the touch.

8. Repeat Steps 1-7 until the degas bottle level is ok."

I have a 2000 Winnebago motor home with the V-10 engine. We just returned from a 300 mile trip and when I climbed the hill near our house and then stopped at the driveway it pushed water out of the overflow. I changed the T-stat and coolant but still have the problem. The temp gage never registered above normal even though the red light came on.
