Sunday night I was backing my truck into the driveway thinking how happy I am with it and what an upgrade it is over my old 94 f-150. Monday morning driving to work I was wondering why is my truck shaking so badly. After reading on here and talking to the local shop early diagnosis is a coil. So it sits at the shop waiting to be diagnosed. I'm still happy with the truck I just don't think I'll let myself reflect on it. I was suprised this popped up as my mileage is low, under 40,000. Do most people just go ahead and have them all replaced? Or just the one or ones that are bad?
At about 117,000 miles, I thought I might have a bad coil due to an elusive vibration/possible missfire, so replaced them all due to the mileage. Turns out I had no coil problem. Since that time (<20k miles), I have had two of the news to go bad, and they were Motorcraft coils purchased in the aftermarket. So, in hindsight, I wish I had left well enough alone, and ultimately only replaced individual bad coils as needed.
As a side benefit, I replaced the plugs again too at the same time, only to cause a misfire due to a cracked plug. This led to a cat replacement due to a rich burn while I diagnosed. So, in total, spent a lot of doe that was unneccessary initially.
Coil and plug in cylinder number 1. With my lower mileage and the cost of just this one I will be holding off to see if it happens again. If lightening strikes twice I may do them all we'll see.
