I just got back from a trip from TN to SC. Just a few days before the trip I serviced the truck, changing both fuel filters. I filled the truck up before I left putting a bottle of diesel kleen in it also (grey bottle). I got about 50 miles from the house and my water in fuel warning came on. So I pulled over at a tire shop and they loaned me a drain pan, and I drained the HFCM. Not 1 mile from pulling out of the parking lot the warning came on again. I though no way! So I drove another 50 miles or so and it came on again, so I repeated the process pulled over at a shop and drained the thing again. The warning still repeated to come on the entire trip. When I filled up the second time I put the white bottle of diesel clean in it (the small bottle for 40 gallons). Any ideas? Can I clean what ever sensor is in there?
well did you find water in the fuel or not?
if not you can either replace the wif sensor or try to clean it. its located on the fuel pump housing on the frame rail
Silly question but are you using OEM fuel filters? and FWIW my water in fuel light has never come on... and i only drain it every fuel filter change. Ive always thought my WIF sensor was bad. its wierd how yours is acting...
I was having the WIF light come on frequently as well.
I drained into a clear Peanut butter jar and found only a little water
but would have "sand-like" glob on the bottom of the jar.
So, I drained the HFCM and then sprayed the inside with
CARB Cleaner (some say use something else) and out came
all kinds of brown/rust colored goo. I keep aiming the straw around
inside and spraying until it came out clean.
I had both driver's side wheels on ramps to give the Ex a good
tilt and get more room (I have 2wd, not as much ground clearance).
It's been a few months and no WIF (I hope I haven't jinxed myself).
As other's have said, if this doesn't work you might have to replace
the WIF sensor inside the HFCM.
Absolutely I'm only using OEM filters. Misky, did you just spray up into where the drain plug is or did you remove the cap and filter?
I just removed the drain plug and cleaned it all out, trying to spray
against the sides/top/bottom/back etc. to clean each surface.
If you are 4x4 you might have a lot less room than I did.
