When I installed front shocks a while ago, one of the passengers side lower mount bolts snapped off on re-install. I ran the truck for a bit with one bolt only (foolish I know) and now the other has snapped off. When the first one broke, I attempted to replace the bolt with the coil spring and control arm still on the truck. Couldn't get a good purchase on the bolt head and get a ratchet in there.
Do I have to remove the coil to get in there? Are the lower shock mount bolts threaded into the control arm or just pressed in? Wondering if I have to thread the remnant out the top or can I punch it out?
As you can tell I really don't want to remove the coil and or control arm right now if I don't have to. Thanks.
Hopefully you got it repaired by now. I had an Aerostar, and something broke**when I pulled the lower shock bolts. I ended up drilling out the holes and using a needle nose pair of vise grips to hold the replacement nut while I threaded the bolt into the nut. ** Don't remember exactly what sheared off, I think it was the captive nut that sheared off.
I did get it repaired thanks. I ended up having to remove the control arm and drilling out the studs (yes they are press in studs, press in studs with hex heads - strange). I ended up using grade 8 bolts with lock washers.
Come to think of it, I think that was the way the shock was mounted on my Aerostar. I though what a cheesy way of doing things. BTW, I use Bostick Neversez on just about everything. When the truck was new I did all the Brake bolts, lower shock bolts, bed and seat bolts. Anything I work on goes back together with Neversez.
