smaller than 460
I need to tow about 9,000 lbs and I got a 1989 F250 hd with 460 engine.
It does that ok, I have no issues with power, especially given the 4.10 rear end, but I wish it had a smaller engine. I tow rarely. But I needed something more powerful than 351W engine because standard F250 weren't rated to tow that much, 8500 lbs at most.
Smaller engine means better mileage. Displacement is the most important factor in mileage. Although, yes I realize that if I used a small engine for towing, I would get comparable mileage, it's just that I do it rarely.
If Ford doesn't make 460 anymore, what do they make in its place? V10? What is that thing?

The V10 gets pretty much the same gas mileage as the 460. There might be a 1-2mpg difference, but not enough to warrant getting a new truck. Go to the V10 forum for more info.
