My mother-in-law has a 96 E150 conversion van with the 351. The blower will not blow at all and she says the blower motor is only about a year old. I checked the fuses under the hood and it seemed OK. Is there another thing to check other thatn the blower motor itself, and how big a job is it to replace the blower motor on these vans? I am more accostomed to wrenching on my Excursion, not a van, but may need to.
Went to check the connections and the connector to the blower motor seemed a little loose. Also read on another forum to lightly tap the blower motor, so I tried that also. Not sure which it was, but between the two it is now working again! Even if it quits working, now at least I'm pretty sure it's the motor itself.
The blower motors without squirrel cage wheel typically can be had for less than $50 if you check around. I bought new OEM from eBay for $30 shipped, naturally never seen another that cheap!
The only hassle changing the blower is the battery typically comes out first. If it comes to a replacement check your resistor bridge and the relay too---can't hurt.
Are you saying you installed the 2nd new blower motor in "only about a year"?
Did you diagnose how they failed?
I ask b/c that seems unusual, suggesting something is ruining them prematurely.
Presume it has the peculiar tube attached to it? Problems with this tube can quickly destroy the motor's brushes and/or seize bearing. If sealing & installed properly the venting should prolong motor life.
I have not yet replaced it. The connection was loose and it seems to be working fine now. If I do end up replacing it, I will need more info on this "peculiar tube" you mention. Thanks for the heads up on it!
