I have an issue with my 02 2WD 4.6L today that I have never encountered before (this is an automatic tranny). Everthing was fine going down the interstate but upon exit the idle speed was way over normal and I had to brake really hard to stop. The idle speed jumped to 3k rpm's in neutral.
Leaving the exit ramp the throttle continued to be really fast and the truck speed was a lot less than the rpm's would normally produce. The tranny would not shift from low to 2nd without letting off the throttle and it didn't shift into 3rd or OD. Turning the OD on or off didn't make any difference.
After shutting off the engine, a restart results in the idle speed of 2K rpm in Park and the high idle remains when the tranny is shifted into "D". I attached my scan tool and there are no codes or pending codes.
Does anyone have any ideas on what this might be or if there are other diagnostics that I should try?
Yes.
First what controls idle speed?
Intake Air Controller (IAC) right?
It's stuck open.
Remove it and do a cleaning so the pintel valve is free to move.
Use throttle body spray cleaner or replace the part..
Good luck.
bluegrass 7; thanks for the help. Cleaning the IAC solved the problem. Its weird how the IAC problem kept the tranny from shifting gears. I guess the engine computer affected the tranny computer.
