I have been reading threads where some advise not to put headers on a 300 six because it reduces tourque. I have a set of headers and a stock manifold. I want to get the most out of my 1982 rebuild to use on my ranch and max tourque for towing is important. Please advise.
The problems with headers over the EFI manifolds are they tend to loosen, break, create lots of heat in the engine compartment and make it very difficult to change the starter. As far as impact on torque goes, that's one of those things that can only be determined with before/after dyno pulls. Anything else is just speculation. If I were inclined toward headers, I don't think the difference in torque (if any) would make a difference.
You won't loose torque with headers. You will gain torque.
Most people don't like headers because of gasket leaks at the head, issues with starters ( heat cooking starting and harder to replace ) and just more noise then a cast iron manifold/s.
That's why most people suggest the EFI dual exhaust manifolds.
Headers will out perform cast iron manifolds, period!
If you already have headers run them. If you don't like them you can always change them out down the road.
