Just purchased 86 F250 4x4 Automatic with a 460. The vehicle currently has 112K miles on both engine and tranny. All in apparent good shape.
In about a year I want to be towing about an 8000lb Fifth Wheel, heading toward Washington State. I know the gas mileage is going to suck, so I believe it is far better for me, to have a very strong and efficient running truck to maximize my mileage.
What should I be looking at and planning to do with this vehicle to GET IT READY!!!. Right off the bat, I am upgrading to a Holley 750cfm. I have my eyes on a 770cfm on ebay.
Ck the cooling system, flush tranny, add a huge tranny oil cooler, change axle gear oil, do a tune up, dual exhaust with headers, change timing chain to a straight up set, ck brakes.
What exactly does changing the Timing chain do for me? You didn't mention a bigger carb. i would think this would be one of the first items to upgrade.
Ford retarded the timing on the cam I think in 1970 or there abouts. If you use an older set or a new set with selectable keyways you can get back a little power. A stock 460 doesn't need much more than 600-650 cfm carb. I like the Carter/Edelbrock carbs so I didn't mention that.
Not really -IMO-, with a stock cam.
Putting it "straight up" (keyway centered on tooth) made a dramatic difference for me.
But I'm sure some of that could be attributed to the worn out nylon teeth of the factory retarded cam timing gear.
At 112k I would say it's due!
That's all I have. A Cloyes true street roller. Under $50.
You might consider a water pump while you have it off. Check to see the impeller or backing plate isn't all rusted out.
ALWAYS change that stinking little bypass hose, before it leaves you stranded.
