hey guys i just bought a 95 f150 with a 6" lift and 36" tires. the cross member where the ttb hooks up to is cracked. i have a dana 50 up front and a dana 60 in the back. I know the cross member is notorious for cracking. i really dont want to take the whole cross member out i would rather weld the crack and then weld support steel all over it to beef it up i was just wondering if any one has done this and if they could give me some ideas or advice? the crack is almost all the way through the cross member and my steering is shot because of this.
While gap is open take a piece of 3/16 plate say 1"x whatever length of height crack is.put it behind the crack inside by tacking a little rod on plate in center and fish it in behind crack. Tack that plate to only one side of crack pulling it tight to the inside. Now break off rod used to hold it(I use a 1/8 welding rod) Try to now pull crack together. Once it's tight enoungh weld up crack with the back piece as a backing strip u can weld into.
To pull together there's so many ways. Weld tabs on either side of crack, then clamp tabs. Better is to use two tabs with holes in center and bolt tabs together, tabs need a gusset to work best or it will bend,or just use angle iron on edge.
