Hey guys and gals... My 88 EB has had lots of work done to it.. just got some new tires... The shop checked out the front end while they were at it... it all checked out.. that was about 2 months ago. I took the van out on the highway finally (I usually just drive it around town).. When I get up to 55-75 the van shakes so bad you can hear air coming in from where the front doors are shaking.. they almost look like hey are going to fall off!! The steering wheel has a little play.. should I look towards the tie rods for this issue? My 94 also has some play in the wheel and a small vibration while driving... ugh!
Whever checked it out was not that thorough then. Any shaking that bad is either a balance issue or some seriously loose bushings (which would usually just pop or clunk instead of shaking.)
Also be aware, an out or round tire can pass a standard balance test. You need to make sure they do whats called a road force balance, which it measure how far out or round the tires are. Sometimes out of round can be resolved or minimized by rotating the tire to a different orientation on the rim, but if its too bad, the rim might need to be replaced.
Driveshaft issues can also cause significant vibrations.
A good tire on a bad machine can cause these problems . I worked for a well known tire mfg. years ago .Balencers go out of calibration . Or the grunts do not know how to use them !
Take the van back to the shop that installed the tires, and take one of their mechanics out for a drive to show them the shakes. It would be better if you can say that the van did not shake like that before the new tires.
The problem is .. I don't know if it shaked that bad before.. the tires were awful and I was afraid to go that fast... but the shake is pretty severe.. I'll take it back in.. it drives great around town!
