Keep' in your FICM in good shape is a great idea, but from what you've told us I doubt that's the only problem. Really sounds like a problem with the high pressure oil system is a big possibility. Could be pump, IPR, stand pipes... Your cold start issues could be stiction or FICM or HPOP related. I'd say troubleshoot the oil system, when you've got that running right deal with what isn't fixed.

Oh, if you still want to tackle the FICM first check out Ed like they said, or Bullet Proof Diesel.

Before you start throwing parts at it I would get your scan gauge II and get your xgauges set up and do some trouble shooting. My understanding is that a bad FICM usually rears its ugly head on cold starts. But if you have your scan gauge you can easily check the FICM voltages and rule it out. But if you need your FICM done Ed is the man, I am running one he rebuilt and installed the atlas 40 tune and I love it. You may also find you have some DTC's that can help point you in the right direction as well.
