2011 5.0L Engine Replacement

2011 F-150 5.0L has burned oil since day one. Dealer told me 3 quarts every 5000 miles was normal??? Finally took it to another dealer and found out they are replacing the motor? Anyone else been having issues with the 5.0?

First off welcome to the forum....secondly sorry to hear about your motor. I have not heard of motors having to be replaced due to oil consumption so far. How many miles on it? How about some more info?

XLT Crew Cab 2wd, One year old and just hit 30K. Before every oil change at 5K I would pull the dip stick and no oil would show. Started taking it back to the dealer every 2K and level would be low. They would have to add a quart to get it back to normal. They kept telling me it was not a issue. Every time the oil level dropped the truck started to run like crap. I was told that was "Normal" as well. I cant seem to get a straight answer as to why they are replacing the motor? the story changes every time I ask?. I have been reading that Mustangs with the 5.0L have been having problems?

IMHO- I would just be happy! Oil gets used by either passing the rings or the valves are leaking.

Another of our brothers with a 5.0L had the entire truck replaced after engine issues and other issues. Maybe he'll chime in here and refresh our memories.

I would agree that would not be normal...actually to lose more than 1/2 qt of oil in my mind would be alarming. Good to hear they are replacing it...maybe you will find out what was the reason for the oil loss soon. I have heard of PCV valves sticking and also rings sticking and allowing oil consumption.

I had a 2011 Super Crew with the 5.0L that failed at 600 miles due to a faulty crankshaft. Ford replaced the engine. I tried to get them to give me a new truck, but they wouldn't at the time. To make a long story short, I continued to have numerous other problems with the truck, and even had a major issue with the transmission. I contacted corporate, and eventually, they worked with he dealer to get me into a new truck. I went with another 5.0L and haven't had any issues with this one. Unfortunately, the other truck was a lemon, but they made things right. If I were you, I would talk to the dealer and corporate if you have to, and get them to give you a free extended warranty. I'm confident they will do this for you if you are persistent. Let us know the outcome. Good luck!

Some of the early build 5.0 Mustangs had some engine issues, but not much on the ones in the f-150's. There will always be problematic trucks as the minority, and not necessarily the majority, so as long as the issue is being rectified, that is what's really important.

The issues with the early build mustangs was from people tuning there cars. The tuners would run them to lean and the #8 cylinder would burn up. The ring lands would fail. Ford didnt change anything with the motor, the tuners just got wise and tuned more conservatively. Thats why there aren't many 5.0 #8 cylinder ring land failures anymore.

Just goes to show that the 5.0 isn't perfect either. For all the V8 guys raging on the eboost for its inter cooler/misfire issue.

OP sorry to hear you had this trouble. On the bright side your truck with 30k miles will have a brand new engine. The oil consumption is odd, and probably your new engine will be just fine.

Good luck.

Very true. The one thing that I personally would hope to avoid here is people researching ONLY to the limits of FTE and deciding not to buy a 5.0L or a 3.5L truck because of a couple of issues. The 6.2L isn't 100% trouble free either, the point being, there will be a few issues and I feel for the folks who are affected by these issues.

IMHO, the upside here is that the OP found a dealer who did the right thing, made a decision and got him a new engine after he agonized with his selling dealer over excessive oil consumption. Bravo Zulu to that dealer!!! May the new engine last for 100's of thousands of miles!

Good News and Bad News.
Good news is that I got the truck back with a new short block. I was told it lost a cylinder??? Bad news it back in the shop again and wont start? Good news is that I think Ford will do the right thing and replace the vehicle. I love the truck but I do believe I was unlucky and got a uncommon bad one. Did a lot of research and not too many people have had 5.0 engine issues

I got another truck with a 5.0 after my issues, and haven't had any problems with the engine. You were just unlucky like I was and happened to get a lemon. Glad to hear they are taking care of you. Keep us informed and good luck!

Ok, so now I feel slightly better about hearing it is not just the EB's that have troubles, and slightly troubled that the 5.0's and 6.2's have their problems as well.
The solution may for me to simply "turn up the radio" (as an old mechanic of mine told me when I told him I would hear stuff and worry) and pray that any issues for anyone will get fixed up and make for worry free motoring?!?!
