I am looking at a 2001 Excursion 7.3. It has 286,000 miles, transmission was rebuilt by reputable builder with paper work about 10,000 ago, new paint due to hail storm(got new hood) nice job, has a chip with a controller for four different settings, nice leather, DVD, new shocks, had injector cups replaced and the radiator flushed several times, glow plugs and everything checked out by local shop. She needs tires and it looks like it sits down in the back on passeneger side, could be due to low tire pressure. What is it worth?
I bought my 00 at 271,000 miles and I'm 4k into repairs. Go over it with a fine tooth comb. I'd say its almost injector time at 286,000 miles. Pull the fill plug on the rear end and look for shavings from worn out bearings. You probably will want to look into new springs as well. Does that "chip" monitor exhaust gas temp? If its been running toons with no EGT gauge id be really skeptical. If say sight unseen and what mine went throgh 5-6,000 tops.
The present owner said that he never used the chip controller and that he just drove it with the factory setting. He said that the injectors were sheck and they were good? I smelled strong diesel smell when I opened the hood and he said that diesel fuel got into the radiator and it squirted out the overflow tank onto the hood insulation. He told me that the injector or glow plug cups went bad and that they all were replaced and the radiator flushed several times and that his mechanic said that it would be fine since there was not any diesel or oil in the antifreeze. He was wanting $9500, but said the lest he would take would be $9000, I said I would have to pass at that price.
9500 is pretty steep. Sure the motor is just hitting its stride and the trans may be new but the rest of the truck has 12 years and 286,000 on it. Who spends the money on a tuner and toons and doesn't use them?
2 or 4wd? I have that same truck in a 2wd with 170k. Got about 7 miles on my rebuilt tranny. I love it. I have an extensive word doc on repairs that I have done. At 12yrs old, it's gonna need it. Have you thought about a v-10? They can be had at a really good price
Sorry, it is a 4X4/ I thought he was asking too much for it also. Thank you for input. I will keep you alll posted if things change. I thought about a V-10, yours looks good pulling that trailer!!

Thanks John.
It's treated me well so far, here's the thread where I discussed my trip out east with 15,000 lbs behind me. I was very impressed despite owning two newer diesel trucks before this.
