2002 Explorer Pulley Noise

I have a 2002 Explorer 4 door w/ a 4.0 motor. When the A/C clutch is disengaged there is a high pitched continuous chirpping sound coming from the a pulley that is either the compressor or the by-pass.

Whats weird is that when the clutch is engaged the sound decreases and sometimes goes away. After putting my ear close to both pulleys I cannot figure out which is making the sound, at first I thought to change the compressor bearings but how would the sound be reduced by engagin the compressor clutch? Ideas? Thanks in advance.

I had a chirping noise on mine. Bad idler pulley, and put on a goodyear gatorback belt and it's now gone. I've read it's the a/c compressor that's the actual cause, but another pulley dragging on the system, and a worn belt makes it worse. You can get the gatorback belts off rock auto for cheap. There is a TSB I think on the compressor issue, but I think they have to change out the clutch to one that engages softer. It's just an annoyance issue is all.

FIXED!! Purchased the idler pulley, a new belt and problem solved. I will say to anyone about to perform the same fix note the idler pulley is in a tight spot, definitely use a low profile 16mm socket and remove the air cleaner box. Thanks 2002sport, saved me some serious time and $$$

FYI: When the A/C clutch is NOT engaged, the bearing supporting the pulley spins while the compressor's guts stand still. Under those conditions, the pulley's weight and belt tension can combine to produce noise, if the bearing is going bad.

When the clutch is engaged, the pulley becomes locked to the compressor shaft, and their is no relative movement between the inner and outer races of the pulley's support bearing, the stresses then being carried by the compressor's bearings.

So, it's possible for pulley bearing noise to disappearwhen A/C turned on. Fortunately, you did not have this condition after all, and the idler is considerably easier to repair than the compressor pulley!

I think. Just my opinion. impish
