Water pump Vs Injection pump

Hello gents, new guy to the forum.

Found your group in a search for useful data regarding a situation I encountered when replacing the water pump on my 7.3. You fellows seem to be the only ones in the know, so thanks for your knowledge and help. Major lesson learned.

What I encountered is that while pulling the water pump I found that several of the bolts holding the pump to the engine had been put in with what appeared to be JB weld by the PO. Namely the two top bolts and the bottom left bolt. With pump off I looked at the situation and the fact that the top bolts had nearly no engagement (less than 1/4") and that the PO had damaged the threads to the point where they would not hold torque because it only had 2 threads of engagement. The new Gates water pump I bought had no model specific data, just the generic "drain the system......"
Well, I got "clever" and decided to evaluate the benefits of a longer bolt to grasp more of the available threads. So I ran off to the hardware store and got some good grade bolts that were 1/4" longer and found that I had a bit more running torque and felt satisfied I would have good enough clamping force to get a good gasket seal. It never occurred to me that any manufacturer would rely on two threads as standard but I found out the hard way when my normally easy starting engine refused to start and made a nasty growl when it tried to fire. Those bolts interfered with the IP gear and when I backed them out I still had a no start and per your data a dead IP.

So with the bitching out of the way, I have to ask of your infinite wisdom,
will the slightly longer bolt that I placed in the bottom left hole of the water pump cause any issues? Has anyone come up with the ideal handling for damaged threads in the 2 upper holes? Slightly over-sized bolts or perhaps a finer thread pitch that can be re-tapped in the existing hole to remedy the situation created by the PO?

Heli-coiling those holes would have saved the day.

Some of the early engines have longer and shorter bolts. They have to be put in the right spot otherwise you will rub the timing gear and kill your injection pump.

The latter pump have the mounting spot of a different size with all the same size so you can't mess it up.
