Glad you got your belt squeal worked out BriWas---sounds like a lot of work in uncomfortable positions but eventually worth it. More good info to have!

I'm sure ts disappointing to hear this but is part of the business I suppose. Often times I'm approached about installing used glass and I always say there are no guarantees past me not breaking it during installation and my installation itself. Too often I encounter other issues that need addressing and make it known if they're ignored my guarantee specifically excludes subsequent damage or issues arising from those.
If we don't express our policies are regarding customer supplied parts we're somewhat left open to misinterpretations which all too often leads to problems most of us choose to avoid, preferring instead to supply the parts and offering a more complete warranty or guarantee.
The shoulder shrugging guy could have been a bit more diplomatic though!
Yeah, I knew going back to him that his reply was a possibility. I didn't approach him with a "fix it now" sort of attitude, but something like "Is there any type of adjustment that maybe could be made - tensioner or something - to help this?" He immediately blamed it on the part ("bad belt") rather than even trying to help. I was surprised, because I've been going to him for a while and we have a good relationship. Oh well, maybe he was just having a bad day.
In fact, in the end it was his fault because he didn't clean the pulleys correctly.
