This jsut started happening, when I first start the truck the belt seems to squeek, then stops the truck is a 2002 with 18000 miles. Any suggestions? I was thinking about spraying it with a light coat of wd-40, but not sure if it's a good idea.
This is something that was taught to me by my dad. I have had many 300 - I6 cyl fords with squeky belt and this would always do the trick. It gets in the belt and stays with it longer than the belt dressing.
i have done the wd-40 thing many times with squeky belts.. but the problem is that you have to do it often. the wd-40 doesn't stay on very long, one and a half days or something 2 days im not sure. i like his idea and would think the soap would stay on longer, just which ever you do don't put too much on at one time could be dangerous good luck
I have been thru two belts so far on my truck. One was replaced at 10,000 miles and the other at 16,000. They first started squeaking once and awhile , then all the time. Took it into the dealer and they said that some 2002's have "minor" belt squeak.
My guess is that it has to do with the pulleys being off somewhere , or maybe the tensior.
Have about 4k on the current belt and it is still quiet , so far......
Be sure and get your sleeve grabbed by the belt while the motors running !!!!!!!!
DO BE careful if you feel you must do this !!!
But also, do not EVER use the belt dressing -
Don't ask me how I know ),
but I've HEARD of power steering pumps being ripped up when the belt dressing locks up the pulley !!!
(it was a HORRIBLE sound to feel the power steering go at 60 with 6 people in the car and then hear parts of your engine flapping around under the hood while you're fighting trafic to get to the right shoulder)
Whew, glad that didn't happen to ME
Just replace the $20 belt - if it's a serpentine belt it's 2 minutes tops to replace....

I agree w/jdadamsjr, DO NOT use belt dressing it is only a temporary fix. If you belt is squeaking just replace it and be done with it. I too have used belt dressing the first time it worked for a little while then began squealing again so I replaced the belt like I should have when the noise started. The second time the belt broke just a few miles after applying the dressing and the nearest phone was only a couple of miles away but in 100 deg Texas heat. That stinks
I am starting to have the same problem, but only have 8700 on my truck. I would hate to have to replace the belt now. I think I will try the soap trick and see what happens.
