too remote start or not too

so I have a 12 f150 xlt 5.0 4x4. and i was wanting to add remote start . my thing is should I go for a factory one or aftermarket. in addition in the mean time i try to go out and start the truck then lock it (I have the number pad on the driver door so locking my keys in the truck is okay with me) but the truck just unlocks itself anyways. can this be changed at the dealer so at least i can walk out to my truck in the morning and start it up while i get ready for work without worrying that some crackhead is going to drive off with my baby.

Personally, Im a fan of factory stuff. Also if a problem develops later... The dealer cant point a finger at your aftermarket product.

As for locking the keys inside running...
Just crank truck. Close door. push 7-8 and 9-0 buttons at same time. Door will lock and stay locked. Then enter code to unlock and your good.

thanks bigd I will try that . yeah I am totally leaning towards the factory remote start. i can see how an aftermarket one would probably void my warranty.

I have the factory remote start on my 12' and have been very happy with it. I would go for the factory one if you decide to do it. Like BigDfromTN said if you ever have any types of issues they can't blame the aftermarket stuff.

The factory remote start would be the way to go. If anyone tries to drive off with it say if they broke your window to get into it...all they have to do is try to shift the gear and the truck will die. You have to physically put the key in to allow it to drive away.

There have been reports of thieves intercepting the signal from remote starts and being able to basically drive off with your vehicle. I have been thinking about this issue ever since watching a video of people doing that very thing with their laptop. There is a product out that should stop that in it's tracks....that is this one.

Remote Starters - Car Thief Stoppers

I think I will get it for my truck too however the bad part is that if you want to use your remote start this plug has to be inserted which basically defeats the purpose of having the plug..lol

Good to know. I would start the truck, roll the drivers window down, shut the door, then reach in and lock the doors and hit the window up button. Hitting 7-8 and 9-0 is easier.

personally i dont like the limited range and non 2 way capability of the factory remote start. i personally run Viper systems on my trucks with 1 mile range and they work awesomely. i dont think the dealer will give you issues here the local ford dealer will install any brand aftermarket remote start you want without issue.

I've seen some really cool aftermarket remote starts out there that do some intricate things . but I am torn I think i want the factory remote but if that means i have to get an extra add on fob then i might check out some aftermarket ones hell i'll prolly stop by a few spots after work tomorrow

Ford makes a 2 way remote start that is a plug and play install. It took me 30 minutes start to finish to put it in. Nice long range, confirmation that the truck is started. It also has lots of intelligence..i.e. radio is left off, depending on the temperature, heated or cooled seats turned on, etc.

Its pretty hard to beat the ford 2 way IMO.

2-way starter is a lot better than any 1-way.
Being able to start the truck and knowing it started, even if you can't see it, is awesome.
Last starter I bought was compustar brand. I really liked it, but no idea if that's better or worse than viper.

There are some starters that you can start from your iphone or android phone. Have had those, but it sounds pretty interesting.

I will say that you want to get any starter installed by a reputable shop. Some of the "big box" electronics stores around here do car starters, and they have a terrible reputation for quality, and for warranty. Regardless of who installs it, dealer or independent, make sure you can bring it back if you have any issues. That's worth a lot to me.

Good to know. The rare times I started my truck to warm it up, I used my valet key to start it and locked the door with my regular key.

well checked at the dealer today after work . they quoted me $399 and that gets me two extra keys and remote start. the original keys would still work they just won't have the remote start function.hmmm im not too interested in starting my truck from the next county or anything , no heated seats or any fancy crap like that. Im mostly interested in starting the beast in the morning when its cold at my house or in summer in a parking lot to relieve some of that oven effect on hot days..... but 399 seems like a lot for just one feature.

true the ford systems have some along ways. but they cant beat the options aftermarket has. rolling the windows up/down, turning the rear defroster on, checking the temp inside the truck. the best is the smart start option. being able to start, lock, unlock your truck from your cell phone anywhere you have cell service. you could be in new york and your truck in Washington state you can check the status of your truck instantly. not possible with the ford system.
