i have a 97 ranger xl with 2.3. it was recently crashed in the front, air bags deployed. i fixed the bodywork but couldn't get it to run properly. it starts but will not idle. i have replaced the iac , evr , maf. fuel pressure holds 35-40 psi running does not leak down after engine stops
Lets think about this some more. Seeing as how it requires air, compression, fuel & spark to make em run & you say it'll start, but then stalls, but still has fuel pressure, have you checked for spark when it stalls????
Connect your inductive timing light to any spark plug wire, to quickly & safely check for spark. Also while your under hood, have a listen to the fuel injectors "click" with your stethscope, to make sure they're still getting ground switching & working when it stalls.
It seems either spark or fuel is going missing for some reason.
If fuel & spark check out, seeing as how the airbags have deployed, the computer may have to be reset, but I'm not certain on that, just a brainstorm, maybe someone on the forum that knows, will chime in & enlighten us.
i can keep it running by feathering the throttle but when i let off it dies
You must have posted while I was answering your spark check question. If you can keep it running by messing with the throttle, look to a problem with the new IAC, its electrical connectors pins/sockets, the computer supplied ref voltage, or wiring to the IAC & back to the computer, as the IAC is responsible for controlling idle speed. Just because the IAC is new, doesn't automatically make it good, so make it prove itself.
the ref voltage is there but i am not sure about the return path to the PCM
OK, so back probe the computer firewall electrical connector for IAC signal return. The IAC wire color code there, will be the same as that leaving the IAC electrical connector.
Have you done an IAC conductivity/resistance test, to see if its coil is ok??? It has a diode in parallel with the IAC coil, so make sure your multimeter leads are inserted correctly into the meter & the meter Positive/+ lead is on the IAC VPWR pin & the meter Negative/- lead is on the IAC pin & it should read between 6.0 & 10.0 ohms.
