Do you hear any engine-rev-dependent noise in your radio?
Do any other gauges flare when your temperature gauges flare? (CVR).
As above, I suggest you replace the sender.
I'll have to agree. that's a new electrical theory I have never heard about or experienced

haha, my electrical knowledge is minimal at best.

the gauge worked fine until about a week or two ago. i hadn't really had much time to look into it. it previously warmed up after about 10 minutes of driving, and would sit within the normal range.

all of a sudden one day i watched it warm up and then just continue moving until pegged. it did that for about a week. it would sometimes drop back to normal when the RPM's were higher, but then return to pegged.

i was looking around and noticed the coil wire sitting on top of the sending wire. i moved it away and now when it warms up it just gets to the first edge of the normal zone. it may well be coincidence. all the other gauges continue to function normally.

i'm going to see what happens when i ground the wire to the engine, and probably get a new sending unit because everyone says they are an inexpensive replacement.

A sending unit won't bankrupt you . The only other time I have seen a gauge do that is when the coolant/water level gets so low that you get steam in the voids and that will send the gauge crazy too.
