stopped up cats
This site is so cool i can't believe it.
i just recently purchased a 1993 F150 XLT 5.0L 2WD.
i have noticed that it seemed a little down on power and stumbles some when I leave a traffic light also seems to be missing around 35 to 55 mph. It was also going thru gas too guick. I solved the fuel mileage somewhat by tuning it up. I just had the cats heat tested and they are both stopped up gonna have both pipes Y'd into high output cat but the mechanic said that the right bank of motor is running hotter than the left. He says that is from too much fuel on right bank of motor. Is this bull or can this problem be taken care of fairly easy? Any advice will be appeciated.
Thanks in advance Don.
1. Heddman headers
2. stock collector w/ the front cat gutted out
3. 3" exhuast pipe (to get it going away from the engine)
4. Flomaster 40 series muffler (w/3" inlet &dual 2.5 outlets)
The reason I run dual 2.5 outlets is to regain some of the bottom end I ran by initially using a large bodied pipe. To get you have to give, top end is great for racing, but get up and go needs bottom end. You can't get the best of both (without a supercharger or the likes) without giving up the other. With the set-up I run I have a nice crisp bottom end and a well rounded top end. Just remember the a wide open exhaust isn't always the best answer, your engine and heads aren't tuned and the heads valve seats aren't cut for that. I thought along time(you can ask my friends) before I put anything on my truck, will it help or hurt, what will I gain from it. These are questions you need to ask yourself about each mod.
Yes I run no cats, that was only to help with the top end, being here in Germany I drive alot on the autobahn, so I needed a little more top end, but when I get back to the states I will re-install the cat for more bottom end off road. Also a MSD ignition is a very welcome idea to the truck. If you want to know more email me at jrjohnson717(No Email Addresses In Posts!) and I can send pics for ideas or discuss this further. I do have a few pics here in a gallery but they are older. I base this info off the engine tuning mags and dyno results I read. I am interested in what you come up with let me know. I have read some dyno tests about the recommended exhaust size for a 5.0
(302 CID), 2.5" will do just fine.
