Here's the Deal, '90 F-150, 150,000 miles. After I finally got tired of listening to the idler pulley squeak and sqwak, I went ahead and replaced it. It stayed noise free for three days. I can get it to shut up with a squirt o' WD, but that lasts only a day. I tried grease, it lasted a whopping three days. Are these just chronically Noisy? Also, the power steering pump is very loud. Do they tend to be this way all the time or is it just getting tired? And to those out there with the Summit/Flowtech headers, do they like to loosen themselves like heat and beat headers or do they actually fit well? Sorry for the Long Windedness, must be the beer.
Thx-
hiya chops,,although i dont have a cure all for your idler noise problem, i can certainly relate to squeaks/squawks under the hood..I have a 93 f150 4x4,302....My squealing noises started under warranty back in late 93 with 9000 miles....belt/pulley squeal..ford dealer replaced belt and idler and fan pulley ,they had a recall/tsb on it...no charge....that lasted less year, squealing again...this time belt!!! etc etc. anyway to make a long story short, here i am at 94000 miles 9 years later and to date truck has had the serpentine belt replaced 6 times, idler pulley 2 times, and low and behold the power steering pump went out this past October,,!!!! I give up on thier system!!! if a can of wd40 works stick with it!!! lol...Now that its been 6 months since the last squealing/squawking (power steering pump) im due any day now for the next noise episode!!! Besides the squeals, truck runs great,,,2nd ford pickup ive owned in a row, each one has had its own personality!!!lol...good luck to ya..
My idler pulley is the same although it is most likely the original one. I took it off one day and popped the dust seal off for a look inside and found it was completely dry of grease so I added a bit if grease to it and put it back in and it has been fine for a year now. Another thing I found is that when you change the serp belt, wash the pulleys off with brake cleaner, especially the water pump one as it drives off the back of the belt. I also found that Gates belts are better than most.
I replaced the idler pulley on my 95 Bronco 5.0 this summer and the squeaking noise completely disappeared. The one on the truck was plastic, I'm assuming it was the original ford piece. The one I got at Pep Boys was all metal. The plastic one I took of had developed flat spots all over it, probably the main cause of the noise. I'd say go to someone other than the Ford dealer and get a steel idler pulley. Good luck.
