I had my first experience towing a trailer this weekend. I went camping with my family, so I towed our 12' Starcraft pop-up camper. The expy has plenty of power to tow it. I had to take it out of OD going over some of the bluffs in southern minnesota, but I was able to pass up a hill at 70 MPH. The weather was sunny and clear, so that made it easier. I found that I am not too bad at backing up a trailer. A little more practice and I shall have it down. Just wanted to let you all know
Last weekend, we used our '03 Expedition to tow our 25 ft travel trailer (4,600 lbs). 200 mile round trip, all flat, but all went well. The Expy pulled so well, it was easy to forget that we were pulling a trailer, until we tried to accelerate too fast. This is a world of differnece from the '95 Explorer we initially used.
We leave for vacation in the New England area. We expect no problems with the rig.
Good luck with the pop-up & Epxy! I enjoyed the ones I had (pop ups). The only problem I had was the things kind of "float" when you get up to speed. I had a guy flag me down to let me know I had a flat tire on the trailer. You couldn't even tell it, until I slowed down to stop! Enjoy!

I didn't feel my trailer float. I have a massive stabilizer hitch on it to stop the sway. We were going up towards Duluth last year and we lost two tires. The tread separated. It was about 80 degrees out and I think we overloaded the wood. The tires were well taken care of. Oh well. We ended up having to drop the trailer on the highway and find an open tire shop. Luckily, there was one shop that was open on sundays. They had two tires for us. We sure felt it when the two tires exploded. It was a little scary having semi truck whiz by 2 feet away from you at 70mph.
Sounds like you'll be an old pro pretty soon Chris,it won't be long and we'll have you in a Kenworth dual sleeper conventional with a 53' trailer backing into docks here in Chicago.LOL I wish I'd had an Expy in 98 when I pulled U-Hauls biggest trailer back from Phoenix. I had an 83 Chevy wagon with a 305 4 bbl and went up some hills in New Mexico on I-10 at 25 mph floored in 1st gear with no A/C. Miserable trip!
I've got a 2003 Coleman Niagra Elite (4500+ loaded). I pull it my my 97 Expy 5.4 4x4. Pulls it pretty good, all though any slight hills I find, OD screams at me!
