ok so i save my oil changes in my 7.3 idi and pour it into sealed 5 galling buckets. I am now at the 13-14 gallon mark. Lets face it i don't want to buy another bucket and i don't like these nasty black buckets of oil in my garage. Lots of people talk about burning wasted thus and that in idi's and ive burned new clear oils before just for fuel lube but what about my wasted motor oil? I don't have any electric pumps or filters for this mess. How can i put this into my tank and have less metal shavings ib it if there us any.

Without filtering the oil, you SHOULD NOT dump it into your tank. There's folks that do it and have gotten lucky but the odds are definitely not on your side.

If you plan to filter it then it's a viable fuel but otherwise, it's a time bomb.

 

the most entry-level filter you can get is an old pair of blue jeans without holes. turn one leg inside out, then tie a knot in the bottom of each leg. slide one inside the other, then hang it up over a bucket, maybe with a large funnel. pour oil inside it and it'll drip down filtered oil.
then just pour a gallon or two into your tank after you fill up, and you'll never even know you're burning it. i find a gallon oil bottle is a great tool for pouring into this filter unit without making a mess.

since you're only burning your own waste oil, you have no reason to try to mix as much oil as possible into your fuel, just keep it conservative and you'll be happy
people run into problems when they're trying to run 75% or stronger, no need to go there

 

While I agree that jeans are a great entry level and initial filter, I respectfully disagree on using that as a final filter. Since jeans don't have a published micron rating, and many argue that it isn't less than 100 microns, it's not a final filter for your oil. Depending on what you're running it in, a few gallons of 100 micron dirty oil might cost you anywhere from a new fuel filter too an injector or two...or all eight.

 

i've run over 100 gallons of WMO filtered through jeans, without plugging filters or causing any noticeable damage to anything. i've always mixed it a few gallons WMO per tank of diesel.

the only issue i've had was a timing issue, and it went away after a single bottle of diesel-kleen, after months of trying to figure it out before pouring the dumb bottle in there

 

I'm not disputing that it can't be done and some folks can get lucky running it that way but there's no doubt you're playing with fire when you're running ANY unproperly filtered fuel.

I'm a high volume WMO user (burned nearly 2000 gallons so far) and feel that the keys to success are proper filtration, proper viscosity, and proper engine monitoring. Once you have those 3 down, there's really not much else to burning WMO successfully.

 

hybrid, i respect your experience there, but the combination of my reading and my experience shows that running a low mix of WMO as i advised him will be the least likely to cause him any problems.
that said, thank you for the warnings, as irresponsible screwing around with alternative fuels has the potential to cause damage.

 

Without too big of a set up you could have a couple or mabe even three sets of bluejean filter buckets. this way you would increase your filtering process.

Also the fact that the buckets may sit and settle allows some heavy crud drop to the bottom. You should stay away from this crud and just gather the crud in a waste bucket to bring to the recycle shop in your area.

Some type of magnets (any type like old speakers or little motors) attached to the flow process may help with metal particles.

This would be my idea of a crude low budget system.

Many filter in stages after letting it settle for a week or so. I have a 4 whole house water filtration systems set up with string wound water filters ranging from 20 down to 5 micron in series, and a final solvant filter rated as absolute 1 micron that I get from McMaster Carr.

 

Now that it is winter i am just using a slight mix of 3 gallons to a full tank. I use my front tank on the 89 model F250

 

Any thoughts on hydraulic oil?

 

over the summer i was running a pretty conservative mix like that, but since i'm planning to order a new IP and injectors pretty soon, i decided to work on burning through the 70 or so gallons i have laying around here, then running only clean diesel through the new parts. so over the last couple weeks i've been running up to 75% WMO, and having some issues with air in the fuel lines while driving, you know, the surging and stalling games. i've got my own thread in the IDI section, but i suspect the thick fuel is encouraging an existing problem to be more evident.

as for hydraulic oil, i think i've heard it burns just fine, but i have no experience with it myself. but at your 15% mix, it should be fine
