I have been running Navistar 466e in my school buses for the last 7 yrs and have had a few problems but not many. There was a problem with another owners bus w/a 466e if the water level was low the engine lost power. I had a call today from a bus owner/mechanic that has an american transit 72 passenger bus with a 444e or a 7.3 engine in it and he told me he has a problem he has'nt figured out. SYMPTOM OR TROUBLE some kind of engine overheat light comes on engine loses power,can turn motor off for a few seconds, restart motor light off, engine has restored power. QUESTION does the 1999 7.3 have a low coolant sensor that would put engine in limp mode? If so how does the sensor work. There is no check engine light or service engine light, so there seems to be no code being set and stored by the computer. Anybody want to take a stab at it or guesses.
The 7.3 Super Duty does not have a coolant level sensor. There is a coolant temperature sensor but it is only connected to the PCM on manual transmission trucks. On those vehicles, the PCM calibration does have a derate schedule that is used when coolant temps are excessively high.
I wonder if navstars 444e would have installed there own coolant level sensor since it is in one of there own school buses american transit is a sub-sid of ihc/navistar/international corp.
