I was driving a back road the other day and found a ( I'm guessing) '67 to '72 ford van cab that had 4 doors and a p/u box with a dually rear-end. Very curious about it. Anyone know about it and know where I can find some info on it? It's actually pretty cool looking.
I forget who makes them, but, when I worked at a Ford dealer in the late 80s, it was popular. Most came with a fifth wheel in the bed. They were nicely done. It appeared to be they put a van body onto a truck chassis so they could have more interior room AND six passenger seating along with the bed. Which was a full length 8 footer. They do look cool.
I've seen them. There is a guy who lives about 1/2 hour away - he collects them. He probably has 2 or 3, all a little different. I think it looks weird. Is it a van? Or a knock-off dually? I don't know what to think. I think its one of those function over form things.
I'm not sure. I think the guy made them himself, but then again I'm not sure. I also saw a guy that bought a Freightliner truck, and put a '90's Ford Dually bed on it. I can't decide if its a pickup or a tractor.
They are popular up here in Canada as well. The Horsey crowd likes them because you can cruise in comfort and pull a good size horse trailer. I believe they were an aftermarket conversion. The name Centurion comes to mind but I'm sure there are several manufacturers. I've seen them set up as 4x4's, duallies and even tandems.
Centurion made them too and the first ones were a package that included the travel trailer. These came out in the late 70s. The van had holding tanks in the rear wheel well area. You could ( still can ) order a cab and chassis just like the motorhome manufacturers do. But on the old 74 and earlier van it would be a rare unit to see a conversion, better check it out and post some pictures here for us Ford geeks.
