Transfer case removal

I'm dropping tranny and pulling transfer case first, so what bolts do I take out to separate the case from tranny, do I take the ones out that are on the transfer case side of that adapter or transmission side?

From the Haynes manual, transfer case removal. "Remove the transfer case bolts that connect to the transmission extension housing"

From the illustration caption "remove the six transfer case-to-extension housing bolts"

Very general Haynes repair manual, covers 1999 to 2010 super duty.

Yea I should have got the Haynes manual. I did take them six bolts out and man alive is it hard to get the transfer case to separate. Is it usually this hard to slide off the shaft? Is there a trick to pulling it off?

Yes, they are almost always seized to each other. They tend to get hung up on the dowels and the splines on the output shaft. A good long pry bar, and air hammer along with a lot of penetrating fluid is what's recommended.

The manual just said to keep it level with transmission. It sounds like the T-case shaft goes in one end and the trans shaft goes in the other. The extension housing is a coupling for the two.

The manual also said to use a jack suited for this, ie trans jack. Harbor Freight comes to mind. Or use straps with the floor jack.

The Haynes manual was cheap but covers gas and diesel, so it is very vague on the 6.0l engine. It does have torque specs though.
