Good chilly morning. It was around 10* here in Michigan this morning when I left for work. I drive 45mins one way back roads and some freeway. When I started truck, ECT was 80*. 10 mins later when I left, 170*. Once I got her up and working, the temp got to 188*.
Now here is my question, she stayed from 180* to 186* the rest of my way into work. EOT stayed steady at 190* to 193*. I would come up to a stop sign, ECT would go down to 180*-182*, and would never go up past 186*, and even then only for a short while. On the freeway, almost to work, she stayed at 182* the whole 15mins I was on it at freeway speeds of 75 mph.
Is this normal? My 7.3l took forever to get warm, but would blast me out of the cab it would be so hot.
The reason I am asking is I am wondering if my thermostat is bad, or do I have a coolant problem, or am I looking for a grill block off.
Thanks gurus
I take it the block heater was plugged in over night? Those temps don't seem bad to me with the ambient temp at 10 degrees, At 182 you are talking less than 10 degrees lower than thermostat set temp of 190. The slightly lower temp to me just means that the spring in the thermostat is not as stiff as it was when it was new. I wouldn't worry about it.
Well, I am having issues with no heat at idle sometimes and trying to track that down. Then I had the low temps on the SGII this morning. I am dropping it off at my buddies shop for them to do the tsb cehck on the head gaskets as I keep coming back to that. I have done the chem test over and over with nothing but good results, but everything just points back to hgs.
Are you using coolant? Puking? Does the heater ever get hot? With those temps you should have plenty of heat, I would wonder about restriction in the heater core.
The more I think about it getting up to 170 in ten minutes of idling seems fast to me, I wonder if the water pump is moving the volume of coolant that it should be. It will be interesting to hear the outcome.
WHen I started it up this morning, I left it plugged in as I was running late, so it had the hot heater with the coolant circulating, little trick I picked up at the farm.
I am interested in the results as well as I cant sit still waiting to find out the results. I am still leaning toward plugged heater core as well as it is doing the exact same thing as my ranger would do. I have it at my buddy's shop as lately I just dont have any extra time and I need to know, now.
It was having a puke issue, but I deleted the egr cooler and changed oil cooler when I did a chem flush as well. I dont know what I was thinking, I flushed block and rad, but not the heater core. It does leak a small amount of coolant past the cap, tho nothing like it did before.
They changed the degas cap. I have heat! Kinda. Much better than before, he said he heard it hissing. But, he over tightened the cap. Still have a small dribble of coolant on the degas, but that could b from this morning, i didnt check when i picked it up. They say the hgs r good, so i will see how it goes.
I had great heat this morning. I am flushing heater core tonite and finally installing my coolant filter.
I am also changing my blower motor too, tired of intermittent working. I am just wiring it direct, bypassing the plug, that seems to be my common problem anyway.
Will let everyone know what I find out tonite, thanx!
