I drive a 1989 7.3 2wd pickup and i have been having clutch trouble with during WOT moments. It seems that the slipping of the clutch has been happening more frequent and so i am going to address it. I have the stock 5 speed for transmition. Does anyone have any imput
If you have 227k on the original clutch, I would guess the dual mass flywheel could be bad also. I replaced the clutch in my 90 at around 120k, less than 20k later it was slipping at wot. That time the flywheel got replaced with a single mass conversion kit.

OP a bad DMF can produce the same symptoms as a slipping clutch, as it has a small clutch built into it. This was exactly what was wrong with my truck when I got it, the clutch had been replaced previously but they left the factory 200k+ miles DMF in. And then I got to have all the fun of having a practically brand new clutch taken out and thrown away.
If you do replace the clutch either replace it AND the DMF at the same time or just swap to a SMF and new SMF clutch. Any other option will come back to bite you very quickly at that many miles and will result in all the fun of you having to do it (or paying to have it done) all over agian.
Similar topic, i'm replacing the clutch on my 86 f250 4 speed, i looked up a pic of a single mass fly wheel and mine looks exactly alike, should that be in mine? truck has 183k miles and i'm replacing the clutch with new do i HAVE to get a NEW flywheel or can i have it resurfaced thats what i plan on doing
eallend, since you already have a SMF, you have the choice to either replace it OR have it resurfaced and inspect the ring gear, replacing the gear if its damaged.
if your goal is to do the whole job in a single day, a new flywheel saves the time of running it down to a parts store or machinist who can resurface it, waiting, and driving back. or that trip can justify a much-needed lunch break.
on second thought, you're already looking at yours, so no issues of trying for a 1 day job - so no reason at all to pay for another new one
The Ring gear being what? i thought it was comletely solid? course i could have looked wrong.
also do some trucks just come with SMF and others DMF?
I keep hearing about people with both and then people that modify for the other and its confusing haha. i've already talked to a guy about resurfacing, $30 aint too bad i dont guess
There ring gear is the part the starter engages. It is a separate piece that is press fit onto the flywheel. There usually isn't a problem with them but there is always the possibility.
Not sure if there is some other exact changeover, but generally, 6.9L came with a 4 speed tranny and a SMF. Whereas 7.3L came with a DMF and a 5 speed tranny.
The 5sdp with DMF has issues where the internal DMF clutch can slip, which really sucks and requires you to replace the DMF or swap to a SMF.
The SMF, single mass flywheel, is like every other normal flywheel and can be resurfaced if needed.
I used to like the DMF idea, where it isolates the diesel engine torque spikes. Then the fairly new to me DMF started breaking and ejecting springs.... and I went the SMF route...
If your DMF slips, and its the flywheel slipping, not the actual clutch, then the DMF is toast and needs replacing. I had that happen to the factuory DMF in my truck somewhere close to 200K??? I replaced it with a new OEM DMF I got for a great deal, in less than 20K it spit out springs and I went with a SMF...
so if i'm reading tecgod's post right, the DMF was one of those "better ideas that wasn't"
fortunately, my IDI is an auto, so i don't have to worry about this
