Differences between 7.3 from a bus VS one from a pickup?
My 6.9 is tired and burns a lot of oil. I've located a 101,300 mile 7.3 IDI in a bus and it comes with the transmission. It starts and runs like it's new.
Is there any difference between the two, or is it all in the transmission and gears?
Is it an IH branded engine or a Ford branded engine? (yah I know IH made both).
Likely the bus engine has several different components, I'd hazard a guess that its all bolt on changes, like different motor mounts, alternator, exhaust and intake may have differences. But I would think the core components like block, pistons, heads, are the same and everything else could be swapped over.
The transmission is likely something else as well, but might be cool.
i think i heard somewhere that international used a different IP than ford did - but thats all bolt-on like everything else. AFAIK, everything should bolt up
The industrial application IDI's have reversed Oil Pans, IP is governed at 2800RPM, and has a valve cover mounted CDR valve even on an N/A engine, a taller air cleaner bowl, and depending on the application, can have a crank pulley with 5 or 6 belt slots.
I think that's it, although there might be difference in the exhaust manifolds as well, but can't remember for sure.
I have always wondered which engine truly had more power, a Ford 7.3 with 185hp at 3300rpm GROSS horsepower or an International 7.3 with 170hp at 2800rpm BRAKE horsepower.

It would be SAE net for the ford. Gross horsepower was long gone when these engines came out. So the ford was rated with accessories, and air cleaner, etc on the engine. The international was probably the same output but is lower due to the lower governor. remember the idi makes that 185 @ 3300. Its peak is right where the governor stops.
You should have no problem with that engine. You will need to change the oil pan and you will need a truck pan rear oil pick up tube. I have one if you get that engine. If you get it you will need to switch over to truck engine mounts. I need a international front engine mount for my Motor Home repower that I am doing and I would like to see what SAE mount it has on it. So we can do some trading. PM me if you need some other parts I might have something you need Jump on the deal if you can.
I have a 86 Vouge Cosmopolitan Clas A It has Detroit 8.2 with a Allison AT545 4 speed trany. Its got a blown HG now. I have been working on a 7.3 for more than a year now. Just droped off the crank for balancing today. I Hope to have the engine together and running on a trailer mounted test stand before I start removal of the old engine. The MH still runs and drives now so I dont want to disable it until The new engine is running.
The MH is 36' long and GVWR is 22,500lbs I think it weighs 19,000 as it sits on 22.5 wheels air brakes on a gillig chassis. I am the fourth owner and have worked on this unit for the original owner over 25 years ago. this site makes it hard to put up pics but I will put up some when I do my build thread. I just need to figure out how to do it. The 8.2 had 235HP and the 7.3 should be close to 300 at the crank when its done so it won't set any land speed records but it will be better than before and that wasent that bad.
