thanks for all the speedy responses! they are timed perfectly so i can take a break from the zero temperature climate outside and warm up before trying something new!
tried what madpogue recommended and took off the vac belt and ran it with just the alternator belt on. there was a slight squealing, and i could see the pulleys were wobbling a little bit on their axis. then the pullies stopped moving and it started the screech.
yeah, bad alternator. now you get to decide if you want to replace it with an identical one or something higher output like the 130a 3g unit that so many of us have switched to
the advantage is the higher output and more modern design. it does require some simple wiring changes, i don't know if you're comfortable with that, so thats your call. do a search here for "3g swap" or "3g alternator", and you'll find tons of info.
as for brand, i've gotten all mine from the local junkyard from mid-90s tauruses with the 3.0
Wait - which pulleys were wobbling? Pulleys, as in more than one? Or do you just mean the double pulley on the alternator? If that's what was wobbling, does it also wobble when you turn it by hand?
well. happy to close at least one of my threads. replaced the alnternator and we are good to go.
now i wonder if napa will let me return that vacuum pump if i put my old one back in !?!
thanks for everyones help!
p.s. madpogue. yes it was the double pulley that wobbled. didn't notice it when i turned it by hand, but coudl have been too slight a wobble and not enough speed turning by hand.
