I'd be worried about the load rating on the freeway. Most 175/70-14's I saw were rated around 1,000 lbs, which is right about the load you've got on them. That doesn't include any cornering loads...
At any rate, an overdrive looks like a viable option, and since you already have a C4, an AOD is a virtual drop-in.

The higher the ratio (which means the lower the number) the greater the top speed you'll be able to achieve.
