Rear end question
I am in the process of rebuilding a 52 Ford F1 and I am going to put a 302 with a c4 transmission. I have purchased a gear ratio set and a 9 inch rear end to drop into the truck.
But recently I have heard where a lot of people have been using the stock rearend with a 302 and c4 transmission. Is this a good option? To use a stock rearend with the c4? Im curious as to if this would be better to do than putting the 9 inch rearend and the new gear ratio set in the truck.
Thanks for the help,
Jon
If it is the stock Dana 41 then the gears are pretty low. 3.73,3.92, and 4.27 were the options available according to a few pages on this website.
That being true I do not know what kind of horse power these handle. Those gears would squall the tires at the redlight and eat up gas on the interstate. Depends on what your goals are.
If it were me, and you wanted to have some good acceleration and not die at the pump Id go for 3.00 3.11 or 3.25. The higher the number for more acceleration and higher rpms on the interstate.
Edit:
Example being. 4.27 gears, with 27 inch tires, in a typical automatic without overdrive, would do ~4100 RPM at 75 MPH
3.25 gear, 27 inch tires, auto without OD, would do 3115.
3.00 - 2875 rpm
2.75 - 2635 rpm
I seem to remember reading a ford 9 inch, 28 spline axle is good till around 425-450 horsepower. Any more and you want 31 spline or very very cautious about wheel hop. That is hearsay though, I have no experience to back it up.
