Can't keep it working.

I have a 84 F 250 with a 460. The problem is that motor will die after I get it started in about 30 seconds. I tought that it was in the fuel system so I drained the tank and put new gas in it. (It has been setting for a while) I have put another carb on it. Tired to clean out the fuel lines and I have made sure that fuel is getting up to the carb. I am wandering if it may be in the igniton but I'm not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When it dies will it re-start quickly? If not, when it happens again, pull the aircleaner off and while looking down the carb throat, push the throttle back to wide open with your hand. Fuel should squirt down inside the carb. If not, you have a fuel problem.
If you have fuel, then take a sparkplug wire off, and stick a screwdriver up in the end. Hold the screwdriver by the plastic handle, and put the metal shank near something metal on the engine. Get somebody to crank the truck while you look to see a spark jumps from the screwdriver to the metal of the engine. If you don't have spark, try changing the ignition module on the fender.

I feel your pain! My 84 F-250 did the same thing, and it took me forever to figure it out. Check your oil pressure sensor at the top rear of your engine, to the left of the Oil pressure sending unit. When you start your truck it the pumps are on the start circuit and send fuel to the carb, as soon as your ignition starts and goes to the run position your pumps go to the normal fuel circuit which has the pressure sensor in it. If it is bad, it kills the "juice to your relay..pumps After 20-40 seconds your carb uses the fuel that was originally there and the engine dies. This drove me crazy for over a month until I finally got it. You can use a small wire to jumper the connection to see if the sensor is bad, and you can go without it if need be. I personally went without it for a while, but having that sensor has the benefit of not toasting your engine accidentally.
