My friend has a 2000 ranger 2x4 4.0 auto it always shifted perfect but today put it in reverse it slipped she drove it home now reverse shutters and grinds putting it back in park??
Is the OD light flashing???? Has she checked the tranny fluid level & condition of the fluid, like put a drop on a piece of white blotter paper & see if it forms a pattern, or is dark brown, or smells burned??? Did this problem come about suddenly after some event????
No the od light didnt flash fluid wasnt burnt but it was bout half a qt low I changed fluid and filter+ lucus its working now we will see for how long I guess
OK, good to hear it now seems better with a new filter & some new fluid at the proper level. What did the old fluid condition & pan deposit load look like????
Its not normal for a tranny to use fluid, so if someone didn't top it off properly, or if it was low, its likely leaking some where, so the leak needs to be put right & until thats done keep a close watch on the tranny fluid level & its condition.
If the old tranny fluid was badly degraded & you didn't do a full tranny fluid pumpout after the pan drop, the new fluids ad pack will be weakened & the fluid will degrade faster, from mixing with the old oxidized fluid, most of which remains in the valve body, torque converter, cooler & lines, so have her keep a close eye on the fluid condition & level & if shifting problems return, try the full fluid pumpout with a licensed Mercon-V fluid, as described in the 'full tranny fluid pumpout" link at the bottom of the "Tech Info" thread atop this forum, Without any aftermarket additives & see how it goes.
Since you've changed the tranny filter, if the pan deposit load didn't look too bad from gum, varnish, or sludge, the remainder of the tranny innards may not be too mucked up, so probably no need to drop the tranny pan again to do the full fluid pumpout, just remove the return line at the cooler & have the tranny pump empty the pan with the engine at idle, then refill the pan & continue the full fluid pumpout a couple of qts at a time as described in the pumpout proceedure, to get all new fluid in the tranny innards. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...-pump-out.html
More thoughts for consideration, keep us posted on how it goes.
The pan and magnet looked very clean she just bought the truck few months ago so I have no history on it but ill keep looking for leaks etc it only has 130,000
OK, good feedback. Its a plus that the pan deposits were nil & that the fluid condition looked ok. Without some maintenance history, good idea to be watchful & everything belongs on your suspect list. lol
With that mileage, a good bit of scheduled maintenance is past, or coming due, like a tranny fluid & filter change which you've already done most of, plugs, wires, upstream/before cat converter O2 sensors, PCV valve, fuel & air filters, coolant, thermostat, belts, hoses, flush brake fluid, check brake pads & shoes, change front & rear differential lube, lube inner & outer front wheel bearings & install new bearing seals, are some of the things that come to mind.
Seeing as how its a 4X4, folks on the forum say its a good idea to actuate the 4X4 weekly, to keep it freed up & working.
Maybe with you looking over her shoulder she'll get good service from it.
More thoughts for pondering.
Its not 4x4 lol but I told her to buy a ford I cant let it die on her ive never liked these trannys but its fully loaded super cab 4.0 for 1300 I thought it was a hell of a deal
WOOOPS, I see I misread your initial post about it being a 4X2 4.0L, tired old eyes!!!! lol
Yup if its in good shape that was a good price. The 99 4.0L in my signature is still tight, no rattles, lugs & tugs well for me at 70K+, so I keep its scheduled maintenance up to or before Fords severe service call out & that seems to have kept it & me happy so far.
