Facing the engine #1 is the front Passenger side??? Again 1974 Ford 360 FE. Im getting some backfire and I have been putting it on TDC #1 and checking that the piston is at the top of the cylinder and it is and then aligning the Distributor to point at #1 on the Distributor cap and Its getting fire, I checked at the spark plug but It wont run. Every once in a while it will backfire throught the carb but it wont start no matter where I move the Distributor... Ive never had issues like this trying to time anything I have ever timed...
Yes, #1 is passenger side front. But you could be at top dead on exhaust stroke. Take out the #1 plug, put your finger in the hole, and pop the starter over a bit at a time until you feel the compression push against your finger. Throw a socket and ratchet on the crank bolt and manually roll the engine to TDC by looking at the crank dampener mark. Make sure you have the firing order right and take the dist cap off. Watch the rotation of the rotor as its cranked over to begin your firing order sequence.
