a week or two go i posted about a wiring nightmare on my 73 crew cab.
WEll after trying to figure out all the butchering, wire nuts etc,
i decided to go pull a new(used) harness from the salvage yard.
So i find a pristine 73 pickup at the local upullit and i take the complete unbutchered harness to my home.
I remove and install the new harness.
I go to turn to the key to start and NOTHING, not even a click.
If i just turn the key On i hear a click under the hood like something is getting powered.
Now if i leave it in run and go and jump the terminals on the
solenoid she come to life!
I tried another ignition switch(one i know works) and i get the
same result.
What am i doing wrong here???
I also dont have the heater or instument cluster connected, would that make a difference???
Do you have the wirs on the starter elay on correctly?
Battery positive wire should have 3-6 wires with it on the front large terminal, one wire on the small terminal "S" , one wire on the small terminal "I", and one wire on the rear large terminal going directly to the starter.
Yep
got all those on correctly...
I missing something on the start circuit.
Because in the run position i can jump start it on the solenoid with
no problems
So put a test light on the connector that goes to the S terminal and have someone turn the key to start position and see if the test light illuminates.
You might have a fusible link gone in the harness.
It's all wrapped with tape & runs for about 24" from the wire terminal.
It could also be the neutral safety switch causing the problem.
It could be the neutral ssafety switch, if it is an auto.
Wait there is a thought did the truck you "steal" the harness from have the same tranny as the one you have....meaning were they both auto or both manual??

I bet that is the problem. Your harness may have a plug that needs to be jumped for a clutch pedal switch, or it may have a plug for the neutral switch on an automatic that needs to be jumped. I think ford used lightblue/red for many years for this circuit.
I thought i had it with the Jumper(didnt have it connected),
but i saw the new harnes only had a jumper where my 4spd
has a harness that plugs in and disapears down under the cab.??
Also i tried the test lamp on the wiring on the selenoid, and i get
a light for the Run circuit but nothing on the start circuit???
Where should i go from here?
a big thanks for all the help...
I found it to be another jumper wire in the main harness by where
the column connector is. Its a 4 wire jumper. The infamous red with blue stripe wire is on there too! I never noticed it on the
original harness, and the harness i pulled had it opened or i lost
the jumper while pulling it..Who knows..All i know is the 4 door beast is on the road again!
