I wonder why Ford never made this a production vehicle? It was featured in both Truck Trend and Motor Trend back in 2000 as a "project vehicle". Basically, it was a 2wd Expy with the Lightning supercharged 5.4L engine in it, plus Lightning wheels&tires, and suspension upgrades. I know Roush tweaked both 2wd and 4wd Expys back then, too, but a factory high performance SUV would've been soooo cool! Although, an AWD version would've made more sense. Make mine a Dark Highland Green 2001 model, with the Dark Graphite interior. I guess Ford got little interest to warrant making it a production model for 2000/2001? I wonder what happened to this prototype "mule"? Maybe Ford should offer a similar version for 2013 model year Expedition???? A supercharged 3v 5.4L would haul! Make it AWD this trip, however.
Man, I was thinking about buying a 06 limited or king ranch 4wd and fixing a power plant up with dual intercoolers and s/c and high end turbo.. I'd never get tired of that! Theyre even going to open an autobahn out here in Texas so I could take that thing out and get my money's worth
There is enough room in the engine bay to fit a V-10 comfortably if you use electric fans It should be a bolt in swap and with a pair of turbos there should be more than enough power to make anyone happy.
If you have the chance get out a tape measure and check it out. It's only 1 more cylinder per side and the block casting looks like the mounts are in the same location as measured from the rear of the block. With electric fan(s) it should be a bolt-in snap to do.
I wouldn't start a project like this unless I had the donor vehicle right there. You would need the ECM and the wiring harness in hand too.
It should be better than an Excursion or F250 gets just because of the weight difference and the engine would have to work less at any speed. If I could get my hands on one of the prototype 4 cam V10s that Ford developed I would do the swap in my Navigator. That would be a sweet combination to drive.
