I need tires for my truck, so if I'm going to buy wheels I might as well do it now since the finish on my wheels factory wheels are peeling off.
I'm looking for something cheap, simple design, and probably ~16.5x8 wheel. I really like the Pro Comp wheels you can get on summit racing, but I never see these on super duty's and I'm guessing this is because their load rating is only 2,000 lbs? This is the price range i would like though. What do you guys recommend that's in the same price range?
I would go to junkyards and scrap metal yards. I know the metal dealer in my town would sell me anything he has in his scrap pile. In my case, I could buy wheels for what they are worth in weight. I think AL is around .40¢/pound now.
Ehh. I think i've pretty much come to the conclusion that I can't get decent wheels and tires within my price range. I'll just get the stock size again and mount them on my factory rim. Next time around maybe I'll have a little extra cash to be able to do it right.
I had the same thing happen to the aluminum wheels on one of my cars.
Right before i bought new tires, i just took the weights off the front, used some aircraft stripper to remove the peeling clear coat and refinished them.
I used an etching primer and metallic black, but you could easily just scotch-bright them and re-clear them if you would like.
the nice thing about doing it right before new tires is you don't have to be careful or mask, just spray and go. let em dry for a day and get the new skins mounted. cost me about 15 bucks and the paint is still holding up fine after 3 years or so.
'course .. if 'ya just want new wheels ... good excuse as any, i suppose, but if you just don't like them looking like crap, a custom paint job will get ya there too.
I would do this, but unfortunately i'm in between houses and rooming at my brothers apt so i don't have anyplace to work on something like that, plus it's winter so it's too cold to paint here
I would also look on Discount Tire's website. There are some very reasonable rims out there. I paid about $150 a wheel when I changed over to a larger tire. Otherwise like others said Craigslist always has someone selling their facotry wheels and tires.
