Is a used engine a good idea?

An update on my sick engine from the "what caused this thread". I got the engine reassembled and started it up. It ran very rough and sounded like it was under a changing load and finally loaded and died like you had released the clutch. Less than ten minutes run time and the filter is full of metal most of which is attracted to a magnet. With the sharp squeal/rap noise I was getting I am pretty sure it is a big deal internally. I am about to begin extracting the engine. Does anyone have any opinions about rebuilt vs used and where to look for either?

will rebuild

It looks like I will be rebuilding/repairing this engine. Sorry I did not think to place a link to the old thread. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...used-this.html I do not yet know where I am going to do the work at. Would it be advisable to have the ability to pull the cab. I have facilities available to me for that sort of thing but it is an hour away and I would need to pay for a tow there. Else it is my driveway and it is concrete but not level.

This engine with oil filter full of metal that a magnet picks up is not a good sign. Possibly the oil pump spit its guts out. Anyway U are in a situation where the block and internal passageways must be cleaned super good. It would seem the crankshaft is now junk. Possibly a Jasper rebuild exhange is best for you. When U wipe out a motor for a second time it gets really costly to build it up again usually. Taking it apart and accessing the damage is best. Remember the clog of metal in the oil galleries probably.

If you go for a used engine get the VIN and have a ford dealer run the oasis report. I always the keep the engine in the truck until I sell it so the customer can hear and see it run. This also helps me get more money out of it as well.

Thanks for the input

I have no history on this engine but am certain it had a catastrophic failure just before I got it. Further I believe it was patched up for my purchase by someone who was not interested in longevity. I will dismantle the engine completely clean all the passages out and inspect everything. I have all the equipment here to do that and do it well. I see a lot of engine gasket and re-ring/rebuild kits available. What are the aftermarket seals and gaskets like for this engine? Are they a good value or a big gamble or a big no no?
