Sounds like the torque converter clutch (TCC) is not unlocking. May be a bad TCC (need new converter), may be defective wiring, may be that the internal fluid filter has fallen into the pan (drop pan and look).
Probably a good idea to check for trouble codes, even if no light on.
Good luck.

If the Torque Converter Clutch is itself at fault, stuck in engaged position, turning off the power to it's solenoid will do no good. The solenoid must be operable to turn off (or on) the clutch whether done manually or by computer.

To answer your question, no, the transmission can be used forever with the clutch disabled or turned off. However, if the clutch is locked in the engaged position, as soon as the transmission is shifted into gear, it will kill the engine.

Dough that it is the transmission.
If you give some throttle and it learches and it is still running standing still you may have a bad IAC valve.

Yes it will shorten the life of the transmission if the the TC never locks as the transmission will run at a higher temp and heat is what kills the E4OD.

Always, First, pull codes to see what is wrong. It will likely tell you. Most auto parts stores will do it for you, purchase a code reader or do it yourself: Fuel Injection Technical Library » How To Run a Self-Test

Do you have a good solid idle?

If it is missing and idling slow it's going to die when put in gear. Idle fixes include cleaning the throttle body, checking/cleaning the IAC Idle Air Control, checking the TPS Throttle Position Sensor, and then setting the idle.

No codes? OK that points more to poor idle quality and you didn't answer that question. I mean if it's idling poorly and you drop it into gear it's going to die.

My guess would be a cracked TCC hub but only a guess. If it is that you would need to replace the converter.
However subford is rarely wrong so check out engine (IAC valve, base timing, etc.).
Good luck.

You may want to check your brake lights as well. Try driving in high gear, when up to speed ride the brake. The engine should speed up as the tcc disengages.

Engine coolant temperature. Just means it wasnt at operating temp when you checked codes.
