Locking tail gate

Ok I started yesterday looking into a way to slow down the thieves stealing tailgates. So what I found was there are three manufactures that make a lock that goes around the hinge. ok but cheesy. I found another company (Pace Edwards) that makes an actuator that ties into your your electric locks and works off the factory locks. I Have ordered one off the internet for $66 after shipping that is fairly simple to install. There are others that made their own for a little less money. Anybody installed one?

If the tailgate is locked using the factory lock are they still able to steal it?

It works so when you lock your doors it also locks the tailgate. something these trucks should already come with. If the theif bust the lock then yes im pretty sure they can still take it. I havent seen a tailgate lock busted though. They just open them up and take them off the truck most of the time.

I agree they should come with these high dollar trucks. With the cost of replacing the tailgate and all the options on it, $66 is not to much to ask from the manufacturer. IMO

I leave my tailgate locked all the time. I don't access the bed that often. Also, I am having an Undercover SE bed cover installed soon and plan on keeping both the cover and tailgate locked on a regular basis.

We had 4 thefts of tailgates in one month a while back. 3 Chevys and 1 Ford. I guess the Chevys are easier to remove. I suggest you keep your tailgate locked all the time. Scrap dealers pay $50 for a used one, and re-sell them for $400.

I don't like having to fumble for my keys or not having them in my area at time of need. With the electric locks it's locked when I'm not around and unlocked when I'm close. Just like the cab.

Mine stays locked when not in use. Some people have wrapped a hose clamp around the right side pivot point on the tail gate. The right side is the side that is lifted out so the left side can be removed, IIRC. The hose clamp may not stop a theft but it'll slow em down or even discourage them.

X2, hoping to just discourage them and move on to the next truck.

Mine always stays locked. My neighbor had his stolen while his truck was in the mall parking lot in Savannah. He still hasn't replaced it.

I don't want an electric lock on the tailgate. The wires are accessible. Cut wires, apply voltage with small battery, and pop open the tailgate and take it anyway. Or easier yet, bust out a window and unlock all the doors. Now you have a missing tailgate and a broken window.

The hose clamp, which is adjustable, works fine. I've had one on each truck I owned. You simply put it on the right side pivot point of the tailgate, insert it and screw it tight. Like one of the posts says above, it is not infalliable, but I don't think anyone is going to take the time to unscrew it if they want to steal the tailgate............

They have locks that are installed under the tailgate release, not hard to install and is non electric, don't remember the brand due to the fact it has been a while since I had one .
