New Bellowed Uppies!

So, the coveted bellowed up-pipes are ordered, along with a FRx! I plan to do this while the transmission is out during the holidays. Any suggestions on tackling this? Am I thinking correctly that the turbo can stay on when coming from the "rear". Truck has been in Arkansas all it's life until now, so I don't expect a bad rust problem, but who knows...?

Should be an easy task if the transmission is out of the way. Leave the turbo in place and do everything from the bottom like you're thinking.

Sometimes the bolts are rusted. Spray it down with your favorite penetrating lubricant, but if it were me, I'd make a trip to the Ford house and buy a couple of extra bolts that go into the collector at the top of the up pipes. The bottom ones aren't a big deal since you can use any bolt to replace them. The top bolts are an odd size that you likely won't find, especially during the holidays, but Ford usually has them on the shelf.

I've done up pipes on 5 or 6 trucks now. Only 1 of them had a bolt break, but all it takes is one.

I don't know. A bolt is a bolt. Those things aren't torqued too tight or structural in nature. If the bolt works with no issues, I see no reason to replace it.

Get all new bolts from a navistar dealer if you have one. Then use antiseize on the threads for later removal if necessary.

Start spraying with lube now. I used PB Blaster for a solid week before the job and no regrets.

Thanks for the suggestions. Question though, aren't bolts included on the kit from riff-raff. What do those go to?

guess if you saw mine you might understand why I would ask that.

but yeah I would reuse if I thought it worth it. but with my van. I replace everything I take off with new if I can. just cause.

anti seize huh. thought it would be the other way. but I will remember that. maybe santa will give me funds for up pipes as that is or fuel tank are my next project that has to be done

The bellowed pipes come with all new fasteners. You do have to worry about replacing them, or any that break during removal. You won't be reusing any of the original hardware, except for the clamp on the collector (baby's butt).

Mine will start to go on this weekend. May have to finish it all the next weekend, but it is a great job to do.

so I have been curious on the coated ones.

they say the coating keeps the heat down and inside the pipe. I have a van so heat can be an issue. but of course its more $. but do you think it would be worth it?

either truck or van, for those that have the coated ones are they worth it?

Make sure you get the dowel pin on the baby's butt aligned in the hole on the back of the exhaust turbine housing.

To facilitate this attach the up-pipes to the exhaust manifolds last.

Okay... related, but slightly OT...

I have a couple pair of used bellowed up-pipes, and won;t be installing them for a little while yet, so I'm considering having them sent off and ceramic coated before the install. Do any of you have any recommendations about where to send them to get a good job? I have been meaning to talk to Clay about who he uses, but haven't been able to get him on the phone lately. All recommendations are appreciated.

I purchased mine with the coating to help keep heat down and make a clean look. I hope the install goes well. But we shall see.
