Bad glow plug relay's
Hello,
I replaced my GPR about three weeks ago due to cold start/ no start issues and it worked fine for about two weeks then failed again. I bought the new one through NAPA and they traded me for the bad one I took out last night. It had a heat crack on the back of the box just like the stock one I took out a while back.. Is there something else I should be looking at that is causing this? I left my truck un plugged last night and went out at 4 this morning it was 15 degrees out and it started first turn.. it didn't like it but it did start.. after about 40 seconds is smoothed out and kicked into high idle..
Also what does it do to the truck when you don't wait for the plug light to go off or if the relay has been bad for quite a while?
Thanks!

The computer turns the glow plugs on for a varying amount of time depending on oil temperature, I have read. The light goes out when the computer figures the plugs are hot enough to ensure the injected fuel will burn, but they stay on for some time to ensure complete combustion while the engine is cold and there is a lot more fuel being injected. If you start the engine before the glow plugs are hot enough, you can get longer crank times, maybe some smoke when it fires, maybe drag the batteries down if they are weak, making things harder on the FICM, stuff like that. You can get the later flashes put into the computer and FICM that will let it start easy and smooth at those temps. Mine (2005) has the latest flashes and it runs smooth after 2 - 3 seconds at 15 degrees, kicks into high idle after a couple of minutes.

I had a lot of smoke when the first GPR went out, and about 15 min of cranking before it would fire.. then it sounded like death. You have to go to the Ford dealer for the flash right? How much does that run if you don't mind me asking.. I am a little worried. I bought this truck in April and have been putting money into it left and right.. I bought it with 94K and just rolled on 105K yesterday. Love the truck, it pulls great for the most part, completly stock and was very well taken care of. Just wondering whats next.. Thank you for your information.
