I want to invest in a code scanner, but I don't know what features I need for my 2003 gas (V10) F-250. I have read that some models will provide more complete "tuning" or performance data, and that interests me (mainly as a check to see of the engine is running at its best). Laptop-type or handheld would be OK - what are the big advantages to the laptop style? My price range is under $500 (preferably, under $300).
The PC type will give you the ability to graph stuff. The diesel guys I know like AutoEnginuitiy. Not cheap, but very powerful. You can really get into the subsystems.
The SGII is a good tool for the money But not the best.
It will not clear all codes. I tried to clear fuel sender errors and that was a no go.It would
show then and not clear. I ended up getting my Snap-On MT2400 out and cleared
then first try. Speaking of the Snap-On. I found that it did a really good job for
most things and you can find them on Ebay. The one thing you would need to watch for
is if you have a CAN Buss then you will need the adaptor. Most of the diesel guys if they
have a PC based tool use the AE setup with the Ford Bundle. Then there is the Snap-On Solus and Solus Pro.
But then you talking some money
All this really depends on what you want to do. SGII good for watching some what live data. AE will let you play
with things and watch and data log The Snap-On lets you do this with a varying levels depending on what one you use.
Also I don;t want to leave out the STC and Edge units with the tuners you can have the option of adding an input or two and
display data while you are driving and also log. Then there are the OBD2 dongles that let you use things with your smart
phones There is one that works with the Android and one for the iPhone. I don't recall the names right now but if you
ask someone will know.
The easy way to pick one is make a list of what you need and then one of what you want. Then look at the spec for
each unit and the ones that don't meat the items on the need list you drop them then compare with the want list. What
you have left is the ones that meat you needs/wants.
if you really want to do it cheap, find a programmer on ebay that is vin locked and not able to be used as a tuner... usually the code scanner function still works, at least it did on the superchips programmer i had on my last truck.
