I go out to my truck in the morning and i turn it over. It turns and it turns. then a bit of a fire so i Quit cranking. nothing. So i turn it over again. It starts but it runlike whaop whaop. uneven and then i hit the gas it smothes out. It runs great and i havent lost power. Then i go out after work and i get the same thing but not quite as bad. I gave it a tune up. cap rotor plugs wires fuel filter air filter cleaned the battery contacts and my problem was lessened. but now it is back and it is worse. I noticed my coill contact was a bit pitted from the corosion. So i cleaned it up. Would this be it. do i need a new coil. Please help . And suggestions you can offer would help. i tried searching the archives but it is hard to find what i am looking for. thanks alot.
Interesting you peg the coil. I was wondering about my coil lately too. My truck has been slow to start, that is, you have to crank it for a couple seconds. I read that the greatest demand on the coil is during starting as the alternator is not putting out and the battery is being drawn down heavily for the starter. There are some tests that can be done to the coil with an ohm meter. Also I think it can be taken in to a good parts store for more comprehensive testing (load test or something like that). My starting problem is not so bad that I haven't gotten around to checking the coil yet and I am waiting to look at the repair manual for the exact test procedure. Maybe someone can tell us the procedure?

My 87 4.9L had a cold starting problem. I replaced the plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, coil. and it still had the problem. The final solution was to replace the throttle body solenoid valve. This is an assembly from Ford. The engine fires off fine and while I believe that the other tune up parts were also needed the solenoid valve was the final fix.

How much is the solenoid valve and what is involved in its replacement. My truck runs fine but cranks excessively to start. By the way, my coil tested OK for primary and secondary resistance. Test can be run in a few minutes.
